A major earthquake has caused widespread damage in New Zealand’s second biggest city Christchurch. The quake, which measured 7.4 on the Richter Scale, brought down power lines, ripped up roads and wrecking building facades. Authorities declared a formal civil defence state of emergency to co-ordinate recovery operations in the city, which has a population of about 350,000 people, after facades collapsed into streets, crushing cars and blocking roads.
